MOT – FAQs
An MOT is a legal safety and emissions test to check a vehicle is roadworthy for UK roads.
- First MOT at 3 years old
- Then every year
- Normally about 45–60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and garage.
- No, except to or from a pre-booked test. You risk fines, points, and possibly invalid insurance.
- Up to 1 month (minus 1 day) before the expiry date and you keep the same renewal date.
- You’ll get a failure sheet listing defects.
Dangerous / major defects must be fixed before you can use the car (other than to/from repair or retest).
- Usually no, but it helps to bring:
- V5C logbook if details have changed
- Wheel lock key if needed for wheel removal
- An MOT only checks safety and emissions, not things like oil, filters, plugs etc.
- It may not be, or claims could be affected. Your car must be roadworthy and legal.
- Use your registration number on the official UK government MOT check website.
